Mobile & Web Games Development
This module is core to students on the second year of the degree programmes in Computer Games Technology, and Games Design and Development.
This module provides coverage of a variety of topics related to game development for web sites and mobile devices. The topics covered include:
Coding issues: screen design for variable screen sizes, coding to file size restrictions, portability issues, dealing with variation in input devices, working with high latency devices, interruptablility issues. Writing games using: limited memory, slow frame rates, restricted input devices, gameplay design for limited clients, scaling games for small devices
Hardware and software runtime environments, operating systems, device-specific APIs, device capabilities, browser technologies, plug-ins, media formats, future developments, programming languages for mobile and web games e.g. Java 2 Micro Edition (J2ME).
Project management: managing small-budget, short timeline projects with small team sizes, lifecycle models, multi-platform considerations, optimization strategies, role of managers, designers, programmers, artists and publishers.
Design issues: design of multi-player web and mobile games, communication protocols, web servers and database management systems, security and encryption, distributed game design.
As well as theoretical coverage of the above topics, students will create a game for a mobile or web platform.
