Computer Games Design
This is a core module in the second year of the programmes in Computer Games Technology and in Computer Games Development.
The student will take a basic game idea through to conceptual and physical design, and present these using customer-facing electronic media as a major portfolio piece.
The classes will be lectorial in style with the lecturer sometimes leading off discussions and at other times the students leading sessions on aspects of games design.
The general aim of the module is to allow the student space to build a strong grounding in issues of interactive entertainment design, allowing him or her to develop a clear understanding of the real-world issues that affect a game’s design and its potential application for target audiences and platforms.
The student will cover such aspects as storyline, characterisation, audiences, costs, income streams, development platforms, target platforms, plotline development during game development, communicating and presenting ideas with respect to conceptual game design. There will also be opportunities to spend time on physical game design, using object orientated principles to deconstruct game ideas and create proposed physical code structures mapped from game ideas.
Assessment will be by three pieces: a personal game design log showing the development of ideas, a customer-facing conceptual game design document, and a physical game design document.
Final Marks:
Game Design Document - 29/33
Technical Document - 22.44/33
Personal Reflective Blog - 11.55/33
Overall - 63%
Grade - B1
